Flock news

2014/15.  23 out of 29 ewes held to AI producing 40 lambs with a much more even spread of ewe lambs and ram lambs, with a warm dry autumn giving them an excellent start.

Rams used this year were:       Sherborne Substance S886

Tattykeel Blueprint 214/07 (imported Australian semen)

Huish Topgun T228 (purchased at Mayfair)

                                                         Newtoncoombe Unity U440

2013/14.  A total of 38 lambs from the 24 ewes that held to AI, with a high percentage of ram lambs,  a lovely autumn but then it rained constantly for the rest of the winter!

2012/13. Amazingly all 10 ewes inseminated in June held producing 19 lambs, the first Tattykeel lambs in the UK.  Our first impressions are that they are very easy lambing and very quick off the ground. Born in late November they have a fair bit of catching up to do with the main group of lambs born in October. Unfortunately the root crop this year is very poor. This year we have inseminated 29 ewes to lamb in mid-September.

2011/12. The autumn lambing went well in really good weather. Lambing percentage was high with a lot of triplets and a mild winter means that they have grown better than last year. The spring lambs have also had a good start. We used Laparoscopic Insemination on ten ewes for the AI of the semen from Tattykeel Blueprint, which we have now received. It has taken three years to actually import from Australia.

2010/2011. We started the new year looking back at the coldest December on record, but the lambs are very evenly matched probably due to a very short lambing period. Lambing percentage to weaning is 161%. We sold 7 rams and 10 ewe lambs at Mayfair. At Liskeard sale we had Best Shearling ram, Best Ram Lamb and Best Pen of Ewe Lambs.

2010. After a very long cold winter it was a pleasure to see how well the lambs had grown by the spring with those going to Waitrose killing out well. We had the pleasure of welcoming the Northern Ireland Dorset Club here (Nov 09) for a look at the flock. At Mayfair the prices for females were very good and we sold 1 pen of Shearlings and 2 pens of ewe lambs. Our highlight was gaining 2nd prize with Newtoncoombe Lightning in the Poll Dorset Shearling Ram class. All six rams were sold, and we also had Champion ram and Best pen of ewe lambs at Liskeard sale later in the month; both ram lambs and all 10 ewe lambs sold well.

In November the N.I. Dorset Club invited me to judge their autumn show and sale at Ballymena. Thank you to everyone who made my first sheep judging experience such an enjoyable one.

2009. May Fair saw excellent trade, selling five rams, three pens of shearling ewes, one pen of ewe lambs and one pen of aged ewes. Although we have a few rams to sell, strong demand for females has left us with only 5 shearling ewes to keep this winter; many thanks to everyone who has purchased stock from us. At Liskeard sale we had the Champion ram lamb.

2008. Autumn lambing went smoothly with no ill effects from the Bluetongue vaccination with a lambing percentage of 154 at weaning. The lambs sold through Waitrose this year achieved 97% killing out in Premium A (R2, R3L) or Premium AA (U2, U3L). A successful Mayfair saw us sell all 7 rams entered, gaining 3rd prize with the group of three shearlings. We also won 3rd with ewe hoggets, 4th with ewe lambs and 1st with a pen of ewes. At the Liskeard sale we had the Champion ram.

Sheep were vaccinated against Bluetongue on 1st July
